A Good Way to Use Colonel Ty Seidule’s Video

Screen Shot 2015-08-12 at 2.26.48 PMI am sure you have all by now seen West Point history professor Colonel Ty Seidule explain what caused the Civil War.

His answer: slavery. Unequivocally.

I think this is a first rate video because it takes on, in succinct fashion, the usual Confederate apologist arguments distancing their cause from the peculiar institution. I’ll admit that there were a couple of things I wish Colonel Seidule would have addressed, such as President Lincoln’s 1862 letter to Horace Greely explaining his official duty to save the Union (even if that meant leaving slavery intact) as well as the few slave states that remained loyal to the Union.

But these quibbles notwithstanding, I will still argue that the good professor executes his concise lesson in fine style. I suggest that we continue to spread his message. No doubt you have come across social media threads that descend into the usual Confederate flag flapping nonsense about slavery being incidental to the war. Why not attach this video – I mean…Colonel Seidule does not appear to be a proponent of the “revisionist liberal agenda,” so maybe folks who would generally dismiss tree-hugging Marxist members of academia such as myself will pay attention to an authoritative man in uniform.

Here is the link – just cut and and paste < https://www.facebook.com/prageru/videos/923232114386312/ > and post everywhere!

  1. How dare you associate tree hugging with Marxism! I hug trees… especially really old ones, and I’m no Marxist. A die-hard moderate with left and right tendencies, depending on the issue… but no Marxist.

    1. Ha – you’re off the Marxist hook, Comrade Robert. I am trying to remember where I first heard that expression…I think it was George Carlin – but I am not sure.

  2. Oddly enough, I did just that earlier today with an old classmate from high school who claimed he had been taught the state’s rights stuff back in the 80s. He has not replied to let me know what he thought of the video.

He was trying to tie state’s rights issues of today to the CW, but I think that has been rejected pretty thoroughly. I think it is a bit strange that he is silent.

I also find it strange that so many will reject what a historian says, but when the facts are so firmly stated by a full bird colonel in uniform who also happens to be a historian at West Point they are willing to listen. The colonel did not say anything which we have not been saying. I do love how he made the statements pretty authoritatively.

That said, I’m sure some of the more rabid anti-government and pro secession types are already foaming at the mouth over the video. Will they stop and think or will they start running their mouths over how they will secede, etc.? They might want to stop and think because Colonel Seidule looks like he would more than happy to lead the US Army in putting down another illegal rebellion (he won’t be alone either. I’ll go back in uniform to help him do it).

    1. Thanks for the comment, Jimmy – and I think you are right…the colonel looks more than willing to lead the charge against a secession movement. I had not yet heard anything from the anti-government crusaders yet, though I am not surprised that they are freaking out over this one.
