Rachel Jackson – Insulted to Death?

Screen shot 2014-04-13 at 9.11.37 AMI am working on an episode of Office Hours Shorts for this week that  asks the question: was Rachel Jackson insulted to death? If you are not familiar with the story, perhaps you will want to check out the episode. I’ll let you know when it airs. And as a related question just for fun, you might also ponder why Andrew Jackson did not just kill Henry Clay. I mean…it seems like something he would likely have done.

With compliments,

Keith

  1. One of those great stories that probably isn’t true. Rachel had had health problems for years, and was seriously ill for quite some time before the campaign, though it’s certainly possible the stress of the election contributed to it.

It’s also widely believed that Jackson blamed the insults on her death, but there is no actual written record of him ever saying something to that effect.

Makes for a great story, though.

    1. It does indeed Erik – thanks for the contribution here. I plan on including what you mention in my video segment.

      1. Excellent! Glad my comment was useful. If you’re still working on the video segment, volumes 6 and 7 of _The Papers of Andrew Jackson_ will have some useful material on this topic for you, if you can get your hands on a copy.
