Atlantic History in the 19th Century with Niels Eichhorn

I am always happy to welcome Dr. Niels Eichhorn back to the show. You will probably remember a few months ago when Niels and I discussed his book, Liberty and Slavery…well now he’s back to discuss his latest publication, Atlantic History in the Nineteenth Century: Migration, Trade, Conflict, and Ideas. I especially love talking to Niels about this sort of thing (way beyond my area of expertise, by the way…) because I strive to incorporate new and engaging scholarship into my US survey course and my advanced course on the Civil War. And there’s plenty here for sure…my students will surely appreciate it :)

We discuss:

• Periodization and the Atlantic World…taking the story into the long 19th century

• Imperialism, progress, and capitalism

• Revolutions - both radical and conservative (yes, that’s right)

• New scholarship in the classroom

• Translating this stuff on the Internet for a broad audience
